The reality is Burroughs pretty much wrote the opposite. She is depicted as being this large, curvy, busty woman in her late 20s to early 30s. Look at what many artist draw Dejah Thoris like. Just using the art to go by can be misleading. While I think his Green Martians are a bit skinny, I do like his overall design. If you haven't seen it, he re-did the covers to the books in the late 70s through early 80s. I personally think that Michael Whelan's art comes the closest to what Burroughs actually imagined. Naturally they couldn't paint naked people on their books, so they got around the issue with loin clothes or roman-like skirts. I think the reason there is confusion is both from the reader's own internal modesty and the art of Burroughs day. I think if Burroughs wanted to say they wore something else, then he would have. The Yellow Men of Barsoom wear furs because they live in the cold, while the Therns wear blonde wigs and sometimes silk robes. At night, or when they are cold, sometimes they wear silks. He said they only wear ornaments, harnesses, weapons for the most part. Burroughs could have said they wore loin clothes, but he didn't. Once again, Burroughs doesn't have an issue saying naked when he means it.īecause of that I believe the folks of Barsoom are naked.

So taking that as bases, we know that Burroughs means naked when he says naked.Īlso to further my theory, in At The Earth's Core (1914), Dian the Beautiful is described as topless, wearing only a "thong" (which in those days meant loin cloth). Also, he killed a native and took his loin cloth. Now, since Tarzan would have no clue what clothes were until he learned of it, he wouldn't he wearing undies. He does not have issues with describing clothing, appearances, or outer worldly things. This is Burroughs we're talking about when he wants to he describes things in detail, especially in the world building books, he can. Some think that since Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the first book in 1912, that "naked" simply means "without clothes" but not necessarily "slongs out". There is a slight debate going on about the Barsoomians clothing (or lack) in the books. I responded back to him, but I liked my answer so much, I thought I'd make a journal entry about it.

They, like other Martians races, closely resemble Earthmen aside from their skin colour. The Black Martians are the first born race of Martians on Barsoom and they tend to have black or dark gray skin with black hair and gray eyes.
